ABOUT THE FREE PAINTERS AND SCULPTORS
FPS is an artist lead organisation based at the Menier Gallery that supports and promotes artists to develop their work on their own terms. The group builds long-term relationships with artists and promotes the dialogue and exchange of ideas within the visual arts through annual exhibitions and events.
Established in 1952, FPS was originally associated with the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts). Founding members featured many high profile and influential artists, including Roy Rasmussen, Lyall Watson and Maurice Jadot who feature in the permanent Tate Collection.
FPS played a significant part in the establishment of abstract art in the 1950's and 60's and was the first of a number of post war movements that freed artists from the orthodoxy of rigid and purely technical judgements. This ethos continues today and we welcome applications from talented artists at all stages of their career.

Peter Murry is a
relatively untrained painter, sculptor and printmaker who has exhibited with Free Painters
& Sculptrs and Brent Artist's Resource., some of his writings are published
in an anthology entitled "Son of The Glowing Nightsoil of the Concealed Emu" which is
obtainable from him at yrrumuk@googlemail.com. His site for artwork and writings is http://quadraoptica.blogspot.co.uk/, he also works on a video blog for Dodo Modern
Poets at http://dodovidpoets.blogspot.co.uk/. In his spare time he is Secretary of the
Green Party Trade Union group and
Green Left.
Peter mistakenly thought
that he was going to have a lot of spare time when he retired from his work as
a Lecturer at the College of North West London In 2005. He has always had
several intertwined strands to his life and activities. Visual art,
specifically drawing and painting has been something that he has done all his
life, recently he has experimented with printmaking in various forms, and
sculpture using wood, metal and found materials. Possibly his visual art is
“modern primitive” influenced by historical and contemporary art from
non-industrial cultures, but an exception to this pseudo-nostalgia is his
sculptural depiction of cephalopods and fish. Also Darwinism and the interplay
of genetics, environment and randomness in shaping the forms and patterns of
life, shape and form his various artworks. Shape shifting and menswear are
involved as well

I
almost kicked the bucket
in
a well-known high st mini supermarket
On
an unpleasant rainy evening
I
thought that I really was
about
to pop my clogs
There
was a poster of a woman with
a
well groomed golden Labrador there
She
and the dog smiled because
they
were allegedly content with
some
product or other
She
and the dog smiled as
my
heart seemed to be surging
up
into my mouth
She
and the dog smiled as
produce
swam about before my eyes
I
gripped the edge of a shelf
Like
a limpet in an atlantic gale
I
thought this cannot be
I
am too important to my self
It
is not the appropriate place
For
the end of me
This was not a good day to die
This was not a good day to die
So
I fought back against nausea and panic
“err
I don’t feel well”,
I
croaked to the manager
He
brought me a plastic chair
And
I sat on it sweating, and panting,
and
gasping the air conditioned air
Staring
at a tsunami of shoppers
Surging
off fetid tubes and buses
Eager
to buy dried pasta, tinned toms,
cheap
booze and whatever
Stuff
was described as food on the packaging
I
watched this sharp elbowed scramble
As
my heart slowed down
This
was not a good day to die
even
if poets are traditionally supposed
to suffer from consumption

Because I am a towel.
I don’t howl, or hoot like an owl.
Although you could wear me like a cowl.
Because I am a towel.
I use my textile texture
To absorb and soak up moisture.
I have a floppy posture, not rigid like a nail,
And I hang around on rails,
Sometimes.
I follow body contours,
But I have no dentures
And while carnivorous birds and beasts
Search the night for living feasts,
The bathroom is the place for me
I reside there with toiletries
We live there cheek by jowl,
Because I am a towel.

MAN RUNS FOR TRAIN
I make no claim to powers of prophecy, I wasn't the only one to see it, but I wrote this in about 2001, how tragic and shameful that nothing has changed.except for the added risk of drowning in the 'English' Channel.
MAN RUNS FOR TRAIN
There's someone running for a train.
As the train moves off down the track,
Someone doesn't stop,
Because he's come so far,
He's gotta catch the train,
There's no turning back.
As the train moves off down the track,
Someone doesn't stop,
Because he's come so far,
He's gotta catch the train,
There's no turning back.
And inside, the passengers sit back,
As the train gathers speed, rolling right on track,
Now they know they're safe on the train,
It should be in on time.
In comfortable seats they start to relax.
As the train gathers speed, rolling right on track,
Now they know they're safe on the train,
It should be in on time.
In comfortable seats they start to relax.
Someone makes a jump,
A desperate dive,
He might not get inside,
But, at least he'll get on board,
If he can hang on,
As it rolls down the track.
A desperate dive,
He might not get inside,
But, at least he'll get on board,
If he can hang on,
As it rolls down the track.
If he can find a handle.
Or something to grip,
With hands or feet or arms,
And fight off the cramp,
Then the train will take him too,
Then the train will take him far,
Then the train will make him safe,
Then the train will make him rich,
Or stop him being poor.
Or something to grip,
With hands or feet or arms,
And fight off the cramp,
Then the train will take him too,
Then the train will take him far,
Then the train will make him safe,
Then the train will make him rich,
Or stop him being poor.
If he doesn't fall away,
As the train rolls away,
So that he rolls away as he falls onto the track.
And if he doesn't die right there,
As the passengers relax.
If he falls off the train,
And he doesn't break his back,
He'll get back up again,
Run for another train
As the train rolls away,
So that he rolls away as he falls onto the track.
And if he doesn't die right there,
As the passengers relax.
If he falls off the train,
And he doesn't break his back,
He'll get back up again,
Run for another train
Unless he changes the plan,
And adopts a different strategy,
In regard to the logistics
Of being a refugee.
And adopts a different strategy,
In regard to the logistics
Of being a refugee.
He could float on a tyre
Or stowaway on a ship,
He could slip past a perimeter,
And get into the airport,
Or pretend to be cargo,
In the back of a van.
Or stowaway on a ship,
He could slip past a perimeter,
And get into the airport,
Or pretend to be cargo,
In the back of a van.
He could even buy permits, if he could find some money,
And sit back in the train,
As it rolls down the track,
Whilst someone else does the running,
Because they'll always be someone,
Running for the train,
Towards a dream before them,
With a nightmare at their back.
And sit back in the train,
As it rolls down the track,
Whilst someone else does the running,
Because they'll always be someone,
Running for the train,
Towards a dream before them,
With a nightmare at their back.

Hoodies
The sight of
an obese older man
With a
hoodie on
Can cause
raised eyebrows at least
Or even
derision
Fashion fascists
would pigeonhole the old
Carpet slippers
and cardies are prescribed
We’d be
getting them on the NHS
If it wasn’t
being privatised.
Hoodies are
for disaffected youths
Who shake
crash barriers and shout slogans
Or for
historical re-enactors
Who want to
live in the middle ages
But medieval
squalor could be all our fate
When they
take apart the welfare state
So with
hoodies on, we’ll barrage the police
With walking
sticks, zimmer frames and false teeth.

the five year blues
It’s the day after the election
And I’m trying not to cry,
But above me, the housemartins
Are slicing patterns
In a cloudless sky
It’s the day after the election
The weather’s cleared after rain,
Now Swifts have returned
And scream on the wing
Like I want to scream in pain
I wonder if they’d have come back
If they’d known before they flew
That they were migrants to an island
That has got the five year blues

London can be a frantic, hectic town;
London can be a frantic, hectic town;
With people rushing left and right
Hurrying up, scurrying down
Endlessly, relentlessly, seemingly unceasingly.
But please remember, wherever you go,
That we can’t all keep pace
With the human torrent’s flow,
Some have prams, young children,
Bulky luggage, heavy shopping
And some may not know
Where to go
Some have wheelchairs or crutches
And some may just be slow.
You may have to keep a schedule,
You may have to make a date,
To get back home safe again
Or to go out with your mates,
But please some respect, some politeness and some love,
If you’re in a hurry, please don’t push, barge or shove.
And there’s one further point
That I’d bring to the table
Please vacate disabled seats
If you’re not disabled.

druids and trots
The Green
Party is a Looney Tunes alliance of druids and trots (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/green-party/11453910/The-Green-Party-is-a-Looney-Tunes-alliance-of-druids-and-trots.html)
out from dark and ancient forests,
and from the depths of inner cities
and even from the leafy suburbs
the druids and trots are coming
you thought that history had buried us
or that you’d bribed us to make us obey
but our ideas are still living
we have not gone away
the druids and trots are coming
send your drones out killing
send your spooks to spy
but we're no longer listening
to the hacks you pay to lie
the druids and trots are coming
strengthen your defences
reinforce your gates
hire guards for your buildings
hire soldiers for your state
the druids and trots are coming
one person passes a message
and ten more the pass it to more
the cause is gaining momentum
like an avalanche on a slope
the druids and trots are coming
the Levellers want their playing fields back
and the chartists want their demands
we’ve come to get our land back
from the clutch of your greedy hands
the druids and trots are coming
you’re plundering our planet
polluting the skies and seas
but we will not let you continue
to rape our world for your greed
the druids and trots are coming
so this is the whirlwind you’re reaping
grown from the seeds that you’ve shown
when you looted the common treasury
and kept the wealth for your own
the druids and trots are coming
